Kurt Warner and Rod Woodson took their turns reacting to the NFL’s fines for helmet-to-helmet hits in Week 6.
“I’m with the league. I think our greatest commodity in the NFL is the player,” Warner said. “I think we have to go to all means possible to protect those players. I know it’s a fine line, and it’s difficult to do, but I like the actions taken by the league to say, ‘We’ve got to stop being a league that’s all about the big hit and get back to the fundamentals that makes this game so great.’ I applaud what they’re trying to do.”
Woodson also applauded the league for taking a closer look at head injuries and illegal helmet-to-helmet hits, but he took exception to the reaction over hits that he deems legal and part of the game.
“Launching yourself shouldn’t be a part of this game,” Woodson said. “But the Dunta Robinson hit, the one is that thing that you penalized a guy for doing the right thing. It was a big hit. Was it vicious? Absolutely. But that’s a part of the game you can’t take away. Guys are bigger, they’re faster, and they’re stronger.
“I just don’t think you should penalize guys for playing fast and physical on the field. “
